What to do in a dental emergency
Before you arrive at our clinic, here are some tips to relieve the trauma of certain dental emergencies.
Toothaches
Remove any left over food in the mouth with water, use over-the-counter pain medication. If this doesn’t help, seek dental assistance as soon as possible.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Try to remain as calm as possible, and only handle the tooth from its crown – never its roots. If your child has lost an adult tooth, try to locate the tooth and rinse it in milk if it’s dirty. Replant the tooth back into its socket and and secure it in place with your fingers. Seek dental care immediately. For more information, you can visit the Colgate website.
Chips and Fractures
Veneers are thin fittings over teeth that conceal any dental imperfections. They are either made from porcelain or composite resin, creating smoother lines and a neater smile.
What is a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is anything involving the teeth, gums or oral tissues that may be causing discomfort. Dental emergencies can vary in severity but if you think you may be experiencing a dental emergency it is important to see a dentist for an examination in order to alleviate pain, prevent further damage or in some cases, to save a tooth. Some common examples of dental emergencies include:
- Toothache
- Knocked out tooth
- Broken tooth
- Facial swelling due to dental infection
- Loss of and /or damage to a filling
- Broken crown or bridge
- Wisdom tooth pain
- Bleeding from gums or gum infection
If you believe you are experiencing any problems with your teeth or gums it is important to have it addressed by a dentist as soon as possible to prevent worsening of the condition.
Can I go to hospital for dental emergency?
If you have a dental emergency it is encouraged to visit a dentist as they will have the equipment required to manage the emergency. However, if it is after hours and you are unable to find an available dentist, you can go to the hospital, and they may be able to manage the condition or give advice until you are able to see the dentist the following day.
Our clinic offers an emergency hotline for patients to call which allows them to chat to our dentists after hours in which the dentist can provide advice or organise a time for emergency treatment. We are committed to providing prompt emergency care and ensure there is time set aside every day.
Do emergency dental appointments cost more?
No, there is no fee difference in a regular or an emergency appointment. If there is an emergency after hours, there may be a call out fee. However, this can be avoided by regular dental visits as problems can be foreseen and managed with early intervention or planned for.
How to get emergency dental care?
